Attack on Pearl Harbor
The Japanese main objectives was the aircraft carriers, but
were already out to sea, but they went for the
battleships. These U.S. battleships were
lined up in "Battleship Row." During
the attack, the Nevada left its berth in Battleship Row and tried to make it to
the harbor entrance. After being repeatedly attacked on its way, the Nevada
beached itself.
The Arizona exploded when a bomb breached its forward
magazine (the ammunition room). About 1,100 U.S. servicemen died on
board, 3,500 died in all. To aid their airplanes, the Japanese sent
in five subs to help target the battleships. All but two (the Arizona
and the Oklahoma) were eventually able to return to active duty.

Battle of Coral Sea
May 7th & 8th on the waters southwest of the Solomon Islands and east of New Guinea Japanese and US aircraft carriers engaged each other. Neither Japanese or US ships sighted one another, but US planes attacked Japanese ships and the Japanese did the same to US ships. This battle was a confidence booster for the US because it successfully defended New Guinea and it backed off Japanese forces.

Battle of Peleliu happened on September 15th, 1944 involving the Americans and the Japanese. It happened on the Palu Islands more specifically the island of Peleliu. This island was only two miles long and six miles wide. This battle was also known as Operation Stalemate II. The 1st Marine Division were ordered to invade Peleliu later assisted by the Army soldiers of the 81st infantry. The goal was to gain control of a small strip of island. The Japanese saw how pointless the battle was and did not risk all their men like they were known to do. Even though the didn't, they lost a little over 10,000 men and the Americans only lost 1,794 but 8,040 were captured. The Americans were victorious but this island had no strategic value so it was left alone. In 1947 there were still Japanese men hiding out. This shows how much Americans took advantage of the island.
Battle/Fall of Singapore
In southeast Asia Britain had huge military base called "Gibraltar of the East". After the battle, British had suffered their biggest military loss in history since the Revolutionary War. 80,000 British, Indian, and Australian troops were taken as POWs along with 50,000 troops taken in the Malayan Campaign. The Japanese began their assault on Malaya simultaneously with the Pearl Harbor attack. This kept the US from helping in Malaya and allowed the Japanese to move much faster.
